It was another volatile month for world equity markets as investors wrestled between fears about the deepening global recession on the one hand and optimism that policymakers would come to the economy?s rescue on the other. Although there have been some signs of a narrowing in interbank spreads, there is still clearly a lack of feed through from monetary policy to the real economy as household and corporates continue to face tight lending conditions. As a result, investors are reluctant to look beyond the downturn in earnings, thus delaying any recovery in the equity markets. At the same time, government bonds continue to rally strongly driven by heightened concerns over the health of the world economy.
